This week THE TINDER DIARIES is hosting a birthday party as unbelievably Monday 31st October 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the birth/inception of GRINGO RECORDS. Somehow it was 20 years ago today that Urusei Yatsura and Eska (with Hugo Sanchez opening) performed at the Colchester Arts Centre. That fateful night I met the people from Damn You fanzine that I would join forces with to begin a record label based in Colchester, Essex. For the next six years it was a true whirlwind rollercoaster rubbing shoulders with the great and good, getting angry and going on amazing adventures. It should have lasted forever.
In that time we went on tour, got played on the radio, got national music press when music press was a thing. We got distribution and didn’t make a penny. We met our heroes, interviewed our heroes, published fanzines. We saw more gigs than you can shake a stick at, even put some on. John Peel liked us (we think) and our releases were shipped and heard across the globe. Indeed it often felt we were more popular in Scotland than our home town. All in all it was a different time, a better time. The workings were analogue and tangible. GRINGO RECORDS was part of the final batch of indie labels that came before the digital revolution and the internet smashed up the music industry. Then again we were never industry (well, I wasn’t until 2005). Regardless kids making music today will never get to know what it is like to have a packing party.
Please indulge me as, with errors and omissions accepted, I draw on my autistic like memory, meticulous journal keeping and hoarding to present what was the most exciting period of my life (until now). It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Yes I will be talking about you.
The episode plays on the anniversary day at 4PM London and 11AM Austin with repeat performances on Tuesday 1 November at 4PM London and 11AM Austin and Thursday 3 November at 9PM London and 4PM Austin.
Proud Of Your Boy. I like you more than a friend.

Uhuru! With THEMES still at the London Film Festival and having a bloody good time, this week the TINDER DIARIES again occupies the Thursday slot and this week it is the first half of my interview with London comedian JOSHUA ROSS. Approximately four years ago we did open mic together twice. I jacked in within the year following the Edinburgh Festival debacle but already in the swing of things, JOSH ROSS went on to win the New Comedian Of The Year competition at Leicester Square Theatre in 2014 along with various other awards. Like voting, if competitions mattered they would be illegal.
For almost two hours, before a Mogwai show at the Barbican, we discussed comedy, the machinations of the comedy industry, named names, why we burn bridges, social media personas, Gavin McInnes and then Grime rap. Hour two turns political and it will follow in a few weeks,
The show airs on Thursday 13 October at 4PM Texas time and 10PM London time with a re-run on Sunday 16 October at 11AM Texas time and 5PM London time in addition to the usual TINDER DIARIES slot Tuesday 11AM Texas time and 5PM London time.

Hey fam. While THEMES is on another break, this time to deal with the London Film Festival, please accept new episodes of THE TINDER DIARIES and let me take you back to the summer and Brexit. The day after the day before in Canada Water we sat down and had a MIDNIGHT BARBECUE. I returned home having just briefly met John Lydon and with fires burning it just went off!
Across three episodes (three hours) we (my unnamed housemates and I) discussed everything affecting the moment. With this I inserted song selections as we settled into a groove. These fly on the wall episodes are like watching a log fire at winter. With the ambient sounds of the garden you will be able to drift off. Like vinyl crackling, the whole thing comes with a layer of burning wood carpeting the audio.
Song selections include Hiena, Guided By Voices, Palace Brothers, Sleaford Mods, Teenage Fanclub, Luscious Jackson, Serge Gainsbourg, Sex Pistols, Bis, The Fall, Boris, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, David Bowie, Karate, Engine 88 and even a bit of Chris Isaak towards the end plus much much more.
The TINDER DIARIES plays on Tuesdays at 11AM. THEMES plays on Thursdays at 4PM. THE LIMEY plays on Thursday, Saturday and Monday at 11AM.

Howdy, Captain Howdy. Today sees the latest episode of THEMES, the noisy movie music radio show where each week I take a subject and select an hour of damn fine tracks and link them with a THEME.
Today’s episode is the first part of a two header dedicated to THE EXORCIST which is being covered to tie in with this Sunday’s Vinyl Sessions at the Colchester Arts Centre which this month is featuring TUBULAR BELLS by MIKE OLDFIELD. Joining me in the Bohm Grove studio is Rick Armstrong, a fellow DJ at Colne Radio where his excellent Prognosis Rock Show has been one I have guested on a number of times. He is also a horror movie buff and expert so who better to discuss the scariest film of all time.
Picking selections from both the film, it’s sequels and songs inspired the first half features Mike Oldfield (obviously), Ennio Morricone, Jack Nietzsche, Redd Kross, the Mountain Goats, Richard Pryor, Zwanslage and much more including a host of fantastic clips and a “borrowed” famous interview with Linda Blair by Opie And Anthony.
Did we have playtime today daddy?
The show airs on Thursday 22 September at 4PM Texas time and 10PM London time with a re-run on Sunday 25 August at 11AM Texas time and 5PM London time.
The power of THEMES compels you
